Jelenas first round opponent at Amelia Island is probably one of the most
outstanding as well as one of the most unkown players in tennis history: AMY
FRAZIER!
Usually i never write names in big letters but Amy has deserved that because
the current no 44 of the world entered the top 100 when Jelena was
celebrating her 5th birthday and never dropped out of it, until today!
She has won 7 tournaments in her career, the last one of them at the tender
age of 31, just a few months ago at Hobart, as many doubles titles, and more
than 2.9 million $ on price money!
The righthanded player was named World TeamTennis Most Valuable Player in
1995, was Nominated for 1994 WTA Tour Comeback Player Award, 1990, 1991,
1992 and 1995 WTA Tour Sportsmanship Award and 1989 WTA Tour Most Improved
Player Award.
The game of the Michigan/USA born player is pretty similar to Jelenas. She
likes fast surfaces, produces a lot of winners, even more unforced errors
and likes to dominate the points. But unlike Jelena she plays a rather weak
and save serve and is definately NOT in a crysis. In 2004 she played 5
tournaments, won one and did not loose one opening match had.
Both girls will probably try to attack their opponents at every possible
moment. A lot will come to the point of believe, confidence and keep going
and going and going, even if the game doesnt work always out as planned.
That was Jelenas strengh in 2000 at Hilton Head when she beat the 1.73
meters tall player 6-2, 6-2 and in 2002 at Stanford when she beat her 6-3
and 7-5. A strengh which was missing lately, and could be so essential
today....
Go Jelena. Believe in yourself as much as we believe in you, and everything
will work out great ;)
