Jelena champion
again!
By Pierre Cantin
Date: 7/10/2001
Jelena once again did things in style as she will enter the
top 10 after winning her third title of the year. This has to
be a very sweet day for Jelena as she once again won pretty
easily her match.
Let's talk about
her match first. Jelena was able to pull off the 6-3, 6-3
victory in 1h08 as she played better than against Farina-Elia
but still was far from her peak.
With 47% of first serve, Jelena will probably not be very
happy with the way she served especially as she was broken
five times but the difference in the match was that Jelena was
able to win fairly easily the other service games while
Dementieva was more in a struggle throughout the match with
her serve.
Certainly this comes as a very sweet win for Jelena. Other
than the four grand slam tournaments, the Tier 1 events are
what is the most important and winning a second title
certainly confirms Jelena's status as a top 5 threat for next
year. Talking about rankings, Jelena's win today gives her a
very stylish way to enter the top 10. At the start of the
year, Jelena had clearly stated that her objective was to
enter the top 10 and she accomplished that objective with
still a few chances to improve her ranking before the year
ends. In fact, Todd will give more info abotu all of this
tomorrow, but surpassing Serena Williams and Monica Seles
certainly seems like a very possible thing to do and if she
can maintain a #8 ranking going into the Australian Open, it
would mean that she would not face a "top player"
until the quarterfinals! Certainly something to look forward
to!
So congratulations Jelena on a great match, a very well earned
victory and a first entry in the top 10, this is just another
of many more to come!
