Elena Dementieva, the 10th seed of Paris, is probably one of
the girls,
Jelena knows best. They have meet 7 times since they have
become
professionals (Jela won 5). The last time Elena was
successful was at the
Olymics at Sydney when the current no14 of the world beat
Jela in three
sets. Their meeting at the final of Moscow in 2001 was a
great day for
Jelena, because she defeated the russian no1 6-3 and 6-3, to
win her third
wta-title.Earlier this year they met again at the third round in
Paris. Jelena wonagain, this time 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2.2002 does not seem to become a year to remember for the 20
year old girlfrom Moscow. At the PanPacific-Open she lost to Anna
Hornykova in round two6-7 and 6-7. The loss vs. Henin in round 4 of the Australian
open was ratherdisappointing for her (3-6 and 0-6). Her best results seem
the semifinal atAcapulco (lost to Paola Suarez in straight sets) and the
quarters of KeyBiscane where she gave V. Williams at least a good fight and
won the firstset 7-5.Elena is a passionate chess-player and always tries to have
her tennis-gameinfluenced by the strategy of chess. Like Jelena she is very
suspicious. Shealways have her mom with her and Vera Dementieva is wishing
her daughter"good luck" before each match. The big difference between Jelena and Elena probably is
their goal of theircareers: Elena claims she wants to be the first russian top
5 player. Jelenawants to be the first serbian number 1.
"Many people compare me to Anna Kournikova. I dont think she
is that
special, maybe she lives in America, and her exposure to
media is greater. I
am more well known in Russia" - Elena Dementieva
