THE ANSWERS
(2 points unless otherwise noted)
|
|
1.C...Jelena won three matches in qualifying, then won
four more to advance to the final of the $25k challenger
in Saga, Japan. There, she lost to her then-fellow
Australian countrywoman Alicia Molik.
======================
2.Chanda Rubin, after easily defeating a distracted
Jelena in the SF of Los Angeles in 2002.
======================
3.A...Jelena has never won an ITF singles title, and has
only played in a handful of ITF events during her career
as she's generally focused on WTA tour events. As noted
in Question #1, though, she was RU in Saga in October
1998.
======================
4.B...Jelena's career high in singles is #4.
======================
5.(3 points) She held the #4 ranking for five weeks in
2002, from August 19 until September 22.
======================
6.(2 points for each of the six correct answers) Farina
Elia/False (Strasbourg 2002), Mauresmo/True (Rome 2001),
Panova/True (Sarasota 2002), Sanchez Vicario/True (Tokyo
Princess Cup 2001), Seles/False (Bahia 2001). As for
Kournikova, Jelena did defeat her in a singles final in
Hong Kong in 2001, but it was an exhibition event, so
the answer for her is False. But since it was a trick
question, give yourself 1 point if you said True.
======================
7.B...the Australian team of Jelena and Mark
Philippoussis defeated Sweden (Asa Carlsson & Jonas
Bjorkman) 2-1 in the Hopman final.
======================
8.A...Jelena has twice defeated world #1's.
======================
9.(2 points for each of the six correct answers) The

against world #1's included two more with Hingis (0-2),
two versus Serena Williams (0-2) and one against
Jennifer Capriati (0-1).
======================
10.She's Rita Kuti Kis.
======================
BONUS (3 points): Jelena finished in 4th place in
Sydney. She lost a tight three-setter to eventual
Silver Medalist Elena Dementieva in the SF, then lost
the Bronze Medal Match to Monica Seles.
44-31...Jelena in 2001
