After Elena Dementieva had won the silber medal at the olympic games at
Sydney, and reached the semis of the US Open in 2000, people were surely
expecting her to have her big breakthrough in 2001, but the fans of the 1.80
meters tall russian had to wait until 2003 for Elenas first win of a
tournament.
But finally she did win at Amelia Island, followed by taking home the
trophies of Bali and Shanghai and together with 4 semifinals she reached,
that meant position no 8 of the world at the end of 2003!
The 22 year old girl from Moscow still claims that position now but is very
much in danger to fall into nowhere as this year started as complete
disaster! After 5 tournaments she played this year (one Grand Slam) she has
only three wins and only won disappointing 132 points which would lead her
to about number 70 of the world at the end of the year if you mulitplicate
those points by 4....
On the other site of the net we have Jelena Dokic, who proved more than
once, that it doesnt matter if she plays a number 1 of the world who is on
excellent form or the number 200 who doesnt even know how to spell the word
"confidence".... Its all about Jelena herself, her mood, her feeling, her
emotions....
And so it doesnt really matter that the number 2 of Russia has a great
return, probably one of the best amongst all girls on the tour, or that she
has a bad year, or that she certainly has not the weapons to beat Jelena....
(Jelena is 6-0 to Elena since 2001!!!!!!!!)
Jelena could always manage to beat herself again....
