THE 3rd ANNUAL SUPER-SIZED "EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW" JELENA CORNER
by Todd Spiker

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS ON 2003...

Jelena's 2002 ended on such a disheartening skid that no one could manage the intestinal fortitude to believe the disturbing trend would carry over into the new 2003 season.  Little did everyone know that the slide would be more difficult to end than Martina Navratilova's tennis career, not showing signs of any substantial acts of closure until the year's final two tournaments in Zurich and Linz.
In the end, she managed to end her season with her inimitably dramatic style intact.  But that was more than nine months, a sub-.500 record (28-30), 11 opening round losses, 3 losing streaks of at least three matches in length, an ex-regular doubles partner, a racecar driver and two coaches after the season had started in vain in Tokyo with The Fair One dropping the first five games of her opening match against Angelique Widjaja.  On that day, Jelena eventually rallied to win the match... just as she did with her 2003 campaign, turning a "lost" season into something else -- a frustrating, but hopefully ultimately beneficial, learning experience that finally seemed to have run its course as the waning year's shadows were cast over October.  Talk about just in the nick of time... needless to say, the lady reached within herself and proved that she still knows how to make an exit that leaves everyone yearning for more.
So into the sunset she goes.  The head is held up a little higher.  The gait has a hint of excited expectation, too.  And is that a clenched fist I see?  Ahh, now that's a mighty comforting sight.

JELENA ON... tennis "babes":  "I think people should stop looking for a babe.  I think they should be looking at tennis players first."

AND MORE... "It's not just tennis anymore; it's much more than that.  It's gone into shorter skirts, who looks good, who doesn't look good.  I think we all expect that."

AND STILL MORE... on using sex appeal to sell the sport: "I'm more for the tennis part.  I think the tour has grown.  I think they've used that a little bit, and it's helped.  There's much more attention on women's tennis because of that.  We have so many different personalities and different players that show different things.  I think in a way you can use this.  You shouldn't overexpose this.  You know, you should also have a look at some of the athleticism and power we have on the tour, not just the looks.  I think it should be combined a little bit."

    CANCELLED: The Gunthardt Experiment

NOW PLAYING TO RAVE REVIEWS: The European smash hit... a story of a coach and his player - "In Borna She Trusts"

COMING IN 2004:  A sequel?

**2004... a quick peek ahead**

After Jelena's eleventh-hour fit of redemption in Europe, 2004 is suddenly being looked at as a stomping ground where a reinvigorated and focused Fair One might be able to reach (and surpass?) the goals that went astray in 2003.
A return to the Top 10, a grand slam rebound, a first singles title since winning on the grass at Birmingham in June of 2002... and maybe even the resurrection of The Dorothy Tour and a second appearance in the Olympics.  All, some or none of them might actually happen, but they'll all certainly be in play in the coming months.
Could the Fair One be about to launch a successful bid for WTA Comeback Player of the Year... or something even better?  Stay tuned.

P.S.--(I'll see you all again here at the Corner late next month, when Dorothy will either be held hostage for a third straight year or finally set free)
