After
an incredible win over No.1 seeded players, Jelena Dokic
and her doubles partner Corina Morariu will have a bit
easier, and new test today when they play their doubles
match against Venezuelan Maria- Vento Kabchi and
Indonesian Angelique Widjaja. Knowing that Jelena and
Corina are already playing some great tennis together
after playing together for a short period of time, this
should be an interesting match to watch, but probably a
nice warm-up for next round.
Maria- Vento Kabchi, with career high in doubles ( as of
Dec. 29, 2002) : No. 52 ( Sept. 16- 22, 2002), and a
winner of two titles, both came last year, in Dubai and
Waikoloa, and Angelique Widjaja with career high in
doubles ( as of Nov. 17, 2002) : No. 82 ( Sept. 11- 17,
2002), a winner of Bol tournament last year, is a pretty
interesting doubles combination with some successes in the
past that knows how to win some matches. Their biggest
success came earlier this year in Doha where they were
finalist. After that, they had some good results, but can
they do some major upset today?
If
we should talk about their game, it should be said that
Maria- Vento Kabchi and Angelique Widjaja have that
fighting spirit that never dies. They are one of those
players that can hurt you just by making you play one more
shot. One of those players that if you are not focused
enough will make you feel like you are playing against the
wall. Just by wearing down Jelena and Corina by making
them scramble on prolonged points can be something Maria
and Angelique should think about. What can be hard for
them is to read Jelena's service game if it is OK, since
recently you can't guess on what days she will serve well,
but her return, as long with Corina's net coverage should
be a threat to Maria and Angelique's possible success
today. Maria and Angelique will probably try to mix it up,
to turn the momentum in their favor if possible, not to
let Jelena and Corina to focus on the match.
If Maria and Angelique can mix up their shots, they will
have some chance in the match, they will confuse Jelena
and Corina with their slice and topspin ground strokes,
few drop shots from time to time, and playing many
different angles shots. But what is most important, to
keep their service game, not to let to catch the score,
cause once they lose their service game, it will be very
hard to come back in the set, or even the match.
My Pick: I am choosing Jelena Dokic and Corina Morariu as
the winner in two sets. I say 6-4, 6-3.
