With doubles match win under their
belt, Jelena Dokic and Corina Morariu will have their next
round match already today, when they play against great
doubles players, Paola Suarez of Argentina and Virginia
Ruano Pascual of Spain. A very interesting and probably a
very quality match is in front of us later today when
these two pairs come out on the court.
Why actually do Paola Suarez and Virginia Ruano Pascual' s
names put together in the same sentence just seem to roll
off the tongue?
Paola Suarez is one of the best doubles players ever. She,
with career-high in doubles (as of August 10, 2003): No. 1
(Sept. 9, 2002-Aug. 3, 2003), has 27 doubles titles under
her belt, with titles in Charleston (w/Ruano Pascual) and
German Open (w/Ruano Pascual) this year, and with three
grand slams doubles titles.
Her doubles partner, Virginia Ruano Pascual, with
career-high doubles (as of August 17, 2003): No. 2 (Sept.
9, 2002-Aug. 3, 2003; August 11-17, 2003), is everything
as Paola. As playing with Paola for many years now, they
won almost the same titles, you can see them playing
always together, unless one of them has injury and can't
compete at the highest or any level, be sure you will see
them playing together. One small difference, Virginia has
Roland Garros mix doubles title from two years ago under
her belt where she was teamed up with Carbonell.
What
can we expect from this match?
After seeing Jelena's single performance, one thing will
be sure, Jelena will not give up. Not before the match,
not even during the match. Though she has only one match
victory in singles this week, and nobody can be sure about
how well she will perform, but it's obvious that a big
step has been made. Also, with teaming up with Corina, a
great doubles player, she will probably have few words
with her doubles partner about tactic and things to do in
the match in order to win it.
Obviously, there is no way Jelena and Corina can frighten
Paola nor Virginia. Their names are still more important
in doubles tennis books, but as smart players, Paola and
Virginia will not take this match for an easy.
If Jelena and Corina want to win, and that is obvious,
they will have to be 100% in this match, from the first
point. They will have to be very focused, and to run as
never before, to fight for every ball. They will have to
be prepared for Paola and Virginia's mixing of the shots,
and great team game with marvelous net coverage,
probably the best at the moment with lots of amazing
volleys and passing shots.
The problem for Jelena and Corina can be that they still
aren't feeling as a team, with only one match played
together, it will be very difficult for them to make
a big surprise against # 1 seed. But this can be good in
long >terms, if they plan to be a doubles team for
longer then just one >tournament. Jelena has come to
Toronto with one thought in mind. Take it one match
at a time and let opponents know she can do a little bit
of >everything, and that is a good start. Jelena and
Coria will have to dig and I mean dig to beat Paola
and Virginia.
My pick: Paola Suarez and Virginia Ruano Pascual will
control this match in all ways, winning in two sets.
I say 7-5, 6-4.
