"I think I had a slow start, but after that i played well"

Jelena is a funny girl! She manages to open her press conference after her
best game of the whole year with the same words, as she uses after every
average win :-)

What Jelena described as "played well" was actually the first game for ages >where her supporters got exited about! She run, she fought, she hitted >winners from every possible and impossible spot on court, and finally she >even showed some emotions on court. Some tv-commentary called her first >serve: "unreturnable" and at one point she was running down a drop shot, >then returning a lob from the baseline and running to the net again, not >only to receive the next drop shot, but also to hit a fantastic winner  there across the net! On top of that, she was incredibly friendly to the ball boys, and by thinking of how to describe her performance in one little sentence i only found one: "Jelena played like she did one year ago"


The start was slow, thats right. Widjaja was leading 2-0 in the first set, but i already had the feeling that something is different today. It was not the "not-bothered, emotionless girl from Belgrade" which was out there in the heat of Toronto. It was a girl who gave the impression that she liked being out there.

She broke Angelique back and being down 3-4 and serving i did not trust my >eyes. Jelena hit 7 winners in a row!!!!!! 7 fantastic winners to lead 4-4 and 40-0 on Widjajas serve!!!! Jelena won that game, that set and she kept >dominating the match.

Jelena broke for a 2-0 lead in set 2, never got into the slightest trouble >when serving from then on, and has been always close for a second break,  but if would be not "our" Jelena we love and like, if she wouldnt hit the most stupid balls sometimes to throw away her break chances :-)

 Leading 5-4 in the final set and serving, Jelena was down 0-30 but then she really showed what you expect only true champions to do:
Ace for 15-30
Second Service winner with 147 km! for 30-30
Ace for 40-30
double fault on matchpoint!!!!!!!!!! (well, its still Jelena....)

She hit 33 winners in 1 hour and 12 minutes, but more important: Her fans were enjoying every second of the match!

I dont know now, if we have our old Jelena back. Widjaja played extremely well, but is still only ranked in the 80s and never posted a win over a top-player, but it really looked like Jelena has got her old fire back, and so i only feel like saying:
