Angelique Widjaja? If you are not sure
if you have heared that name before i got a few clues for
you: The Indonesian no1 won the Wimbledon girls
competition in 2001, beat a russian photomodel who tries
her luck sometimes on tenniscourts at the US Open 2002 6-3
and 6-0 (!) by hitting only one winner in the entire match
and finally played Mrs. Dokic once before, at the Pan
Pacific Open, which was actually Jelenas first match in
2003!
At my preview for this match in February i wrote "Jelenas
opponent could have not been much easier" and Jelena won
7-6 and 6-4. Angelique did not much since, which would
made me think i should change this sentence, but
unfortunaltely Jelena did a lot to make me think: "no
opponent is easy to play for Jelena, nowdays".
Jelenas is now trying to defend the 192 points she
gathered one year ago at the Canadian Open, which became,
after so many disappointing results, Jelenas top
tournament in the past 12 months..... her confidence grade
reached about minus 3 on a scale from 1 to 10 and whilst
young and upcoming players did fear the name DOKIC in
every draw only one year ago you can now hear sentences
like "hopefully I will never have such a complicated life
as.... lets say..... Jelena Dokic" at interviews of them
:-(
But still Jelenas usual day to day business on
tenniscourts looks a bit different as for the current no
71 in the wta-rankings from Pattaya. Angelique only
reached one third round this year at Indian Wells, and
lost either in the qualification or in the two opening
rounds at all other 15 tournaments she entered. Her two
titles she won at Bali (tier III) and Pattaya (tier V) are
nothing more than nice memories these days for the 1.73
meters tall girl and also her win over Anna Pistolezi at
the opening round of Wimbledon 2002 is only a blast from
the past.
And also surviving the qualifications and winning vs.
Gagliardi in straight sets will not be counted as great
success for the 18 year old....... Posting a win over
Jelena would! And so all the pressure will be on our girl,
once
again...
Jelenas bad year began with a match vs. Widjaja. The year
is not over, but the second match vs. Widjaja would
actually be a good occasion to end that period and finally
post a good result. Dont you think so?
Jelena?
