After
yesterday's incredible win and a very good performance,
Jelena Dokic, with her doubles partner Nadia Petrova will
have a chance to show once more all the beauty of the game
which they possess, and to show why they are one of the most
consistence double partners, especially on the grass courts.
With their opponents, Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi, and
Indonesian Angelique Widjaja, with all respect, this should
be another interesting, but pretty easy match for Jelena and
Nadia.
Maria Vento-Kabchi, with career high in doubles (as of Dec.
29, 2002): No. 52 (Sept. 16-22, 2002), and a winner of two
titles, both came last year, one in Dubai and another one in
Waikoloa, and Angelique Widjaja, with career high in doubles
(as of Nov. 17, 2002): No. 82 (Nov. 11-17, 2002), a winner
of Bol tournament last year are a doubles team that is a
good combination that already had some successes. Actually
their biggest success came earlier this year in Doha where
they were finalist. So, obviously this pair knows how to
play together, and has weapon to attack, but does it have to
triumph?
If
they should be compared, then it should be said that Jelena
has the best return game in the business and Nadia has the
best serve, while Maria and Angelique have the fighting
spirit that never dies. Wearing down Jelena and Nadia by
making them scramble on prolonged points will be central to
Maria and Angelique's success. Maria and Angelique will find
it hard to answer to Nadia's service game. All they can to
do is block it back at best, which only sets up a crushing
volley or overhead from Jelena. That's why expect from Maria
and Angelique to change speeds on their serve, to give
Jelena and Nadia many different looks. To try to mix it up,
to turn the momentum in their favor if possible.
Jelena and Nadia have clearly played the better tennis in
Wimbledon. They hit far fewer unforced errors, have appeared
more confident, and their tennis IQ have soared from its
humble beginnings. They are much more than power players,
and that matters in doubles.
The only way for Maria and Angelique to get by Jelena and
Nadia is to mix up their shots as much as possible to try
and confuse Jelena and Nadia. Maria and Angelique should mix
slice and topspin ground strokes, throw in a few drop shots
and create many different angles at varied quadrants of the
court that may confound Jelena and Nadia. Controlling serve
is also central to Maria and Angelique's success.
My pick: I am choosing Jelena and Nadia as the winner in 2
sets. I say 6-3, 6-2.
