After another astonish
performance from Jelena Dokic of Serbia & Montenegro and
Nadia Petrova of Russia, these two will have to pass
another test on their way to the final and possible
lifting of the trophy.
Their next opponents are Barbara Schett of Austria and
Slovakian Janette Husarova. A doubles team that is playing
one of the most consistence tennis at the moment, and a
team with a great history behind them for sure.
Barbara Schett, with a career- high in doubles # 8 as of
November 17, 2002 and a winner of 7 doubles titles
including Paris Indoors this year where she was teamed up
with P. Schnyder of Switzerland, and with few more titles
that she has to her name by playing with players such as
Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Farina Elia, and also her
current doubles partner Janette Husarova ( they won
Palermo in 1996) is for sure a player that you have to
respect and admire. If not in singles at the moment cause
of her latest poor performances then in doubles for sure.
The same goes with Janette, though I would say, at the
moment she is a bit better player in doubles, with a
career- high in doubles #4 as of May 26, 2003 and with 15
titles to her name. Even with no titles this year, she can
be proud to winning season- ending championships last year
where she was teamed- up with Elena Dementieva of Russia.
She also won few titles in the past by playing with some
retired players such as Van Roost, Medvedeva, Halard-
Decugis etc.
Let's
look a bit closer to what the players should do and what
can we expect from them during the match.
A very interesting match, probably the most interesting
doubles of the day. It's a type of a match that can be
finished either way, but do expect to see at least two
close sets with lots of running, fighting and great shots.
Probably, they will all play to their maximum. Janette has
always been a big enigma, especially to Jelena and Nadia,
and probably still is. She is at the peak of her doubles
career, and still can hit some great shots. Do expect for
Jelena and Nadia to serve very fast, to hit the ball
harder than their opponents, but do expect them to make
more unforced errors.
Look out for the unforced error count. Rust could be a
factor. More importantly, because Jelena and Nadia haven't
been tested, how will they react to a possible hard match?
If they are momentarily stunned and Barbara and Janette
take advantage, this match could be an upset in the
making.
My Pick: I choose Schett and Husarova in 3 sets, with two
close sets. I think that Schett and Husarova will play
inspired tennis and win. Let's see what happens. I say
Barbara Schett and Janette Husarova def. Jelena Dokic and
Nadia Petrova 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
