23 year old Amelie Mauresmo, the current no
7 of the world, is Jelenas opponent at the semifinal of
Warsaw.
Mauresmo began playing tennis at the age of six inspired
by the success of Yannick Noah when he captured the title
at the French Open, and though she became a well
established top 10 player and won 8 titles in her career,
she never managed to have a similar success. The most
famous tournies she won are Amelia Island and the German
Open in 2001 and the Canadian Open last year, and so her
final appearence in Rome 2001, where she got beaten from
our Princess 7-6 and 6-1 must be also counted as one of
her biggest successes in her career.
Further the two players met at the opening round of
Moskow, back in the year 2000, where Mauresmo, who was
born at St. Germains en Laye, which is about 10km west of
Paris, won in straight sets.
Mauresmo reached two Grand Slam semifinals last year, and
beat nearly the whole elite of the game at the US-Open,
but 2003 started quite disappointing for the french no1.
She had to withdrew from the Australian Open and all other
tournaments played in January due to a right knee
cartilage inflammation aggrarated in October 2002. And
though she reached the final of Paris and the semis of
Dubai this year is certainly not, what Mauresmo expected.
She is 12-0 to players outside the top10 but 0-4 vs. top
10 players!
And last tournament she played was at Key Biscane where
she lost in the fourth round to Chanda Rubin 6-0 and 6-2,
and also her results this week have not been very
impressive. She needed three sets in both her matches vs.
Voracova and Pistolesi.
The match will be started tomorrow at 13.30 local time,
which is 4.30 am at Los Angeles, 7.30 am at Washington DC,
12.30 pm at London, 1.30 pm at Belgrade and 9.30 pm at
Sydney, will of course be played on center court, and
shown live on eurosport!
Last we have good news for all people who cant reach
eurosport in their countries. A very good Jelena fan site
from estonia shows the match live on the internet, too! I
dont know if they have english, german or even russian
commentary, but the most important thing should be to
watch Jelena, shouldnt it?
