Magui Serna from Spain is Jelenas second
opponent at Poland. The 24 year old girl from the Spanish
island Gran Canaria is currently no 40 of the world, but
in the race to Championships, where only results from 2003
count, Magui leads Jelena by 6 spots, as she is currently
no 23 whereas Jelena claims position no 29.
And though Jelena is the clear favourite for that match,
as well as she was yesterday vs. Casanova, her opponents
could not be more different.
Whilst Casanova had played only 9 matches in 2003, and
faced 5 times top 10 players (and was 0-5 against them),
Magui Serna played 27 matches this year she only faced two
times a top 10 player (Mauresmo, twice, and she lost both
matches) and only once a player ranked between 11 and 20
(Shaughnessy, and Magui lost again)!
But Magui Serna is on an excellent winning streak, having
won the titles no 2 and 3 of her career at the last two
tournaments she entered (Estoril and Budapest), and
reaching the third round here at Warsaw, beating Iveta
Benasova and Sandra Kleinova, both in three sets! In fact,
Magui is on a
12-0 winning streak now!!!!!!!! Pretty impressive, though
the highest ranked player of those 12 was Alicia Molik,
the current no 47 of the world.
Actually i thought Serna was a clay-court specialist but
she is as much of an allrounder as our Princess. Three
times in her career she reached the fouth round of a Grand
Slam tournament, and non of those successes happend at
clay, and also her biggest success at the most important
tournaments, reaching the Quarterfinal, did not happen at
Roland Garros but at Wimbledon in 2000 where she lost to a
young godness named Jelena Dokic!
Further they played at Cairo in 1999 where Jelena smashed
the 1.67 meters tall girl from Las Palmas 6-1 and 6-0 and
at Toronto in 2001 where Jelena won 6-1 and 6-4. And so
Jelena leads Magui 3-0, 6-0 in sets, and though Magui
seems to have the form of her life, the series should be
4-0 and 8-0 tomorrow afternoon!
The match will be played on center court at noon local
time, which is 3am at Los Angeles, 6am at Washington DC,
11am at London, noon at Belgrade and 8pm at Sydney.
