Aliicia
Molik is ranked on position no 89 among the world's top
tennis players and is undoubtedly one of Australia's best
woman players.
Just like the Aussie world No 1, Leyton Hewitt, Alicia comes
from Adelaide in South Australia and kicked off this year in
great style, making the final of the Hopman Cup before
becoming the first Australian woman to win a WTA singles
title since Jelena Dokic left the country.
The 1.83 meters tall girl (6`0``) got one of the biggest
first-serves in the womens game, but it seems as her serve
tends to let her down on crucial points. Speaking of
inconsistance of her first serve from point to point, her
second serve seems to change from match to match, and there
is a simple rule to follow: The higher ranked her opponent
is, the slower gets her second serve!
But not only top players seem to frighten Alicia who is 1-12
to top10 players in her career, if their name is not
Hantuchova........ Daniela seems to be her favourite
opponent as she beat her twice this year. The other current
top ten player, the 22 year old beat, was unfortunately
Jelena Dokic. That match happened at Birmingham 2001 and
Alicia was successful 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3 :-( Molik has also
huge problems against the power hitters on the circult, as
she is down 0-5 since 2002 to these girls (williams, pierce
and tulyaganova are the names of the girls of that fraction
who beat her in the last 12 months)
The australian no2 played 13 Grand Slam tournamets in her
career, never got past the 4th round, and even her last 3rd
round appearence happened more than a year ago, at the
US-Open 2001. She entered the Nasdaq 100 last year, trying
to defend her career high ranking position of no45 but
failed as she lost her opening match to Tatiana Terebiynis
in straight sets.
To proceed to the fourth round here at Miami, the Australian
Open Girls Doubles Champion from 1998 beat Barbara Schett in
her opening round 6-7, 6-2 and 7-6 (!), Daniela Hanutchova
2-6, 7-5 and 6-0 (!!) and finally russias best doubles
player Likhovtseva in straight sets.
Undoubtably a great run from the australian, and even more
undoubtably its well time for this run to be stopped by the
former australian Jelena Dokic, who has the game, who has
the talent and who seems to even have her willpower back to
beat Alicia Molik 6-2 and 6-1!
The match will be played today at about noon local time
which is 5pm in London, 6pm in Belgrade and tuesday 3.30 pm
at Adelaide.
