A star named Jelena Dokic
began to rise, after she beat the no1 of the land of the
rising sun, at the opening round of the Olympics 6-0 and
7-6!
And Jelenas first round opponent at the proximus Diamond
Games at Antwerp is again: Ai Sugiyama
Ai (speak: eye) is one of the most consistant players on
the tour! For 6
years now, she stays at about no 30 at the ranking.
She claimed position no 32 at the end of the season 1996,
no20 in 1997, no18 in 1998, no24 in 1999, no33 in 2000,
no30 in 2001 and no24 in 2002. At the moment she is at
no26.
The 1.63 meters small girl from Kanagawa / Japan won 3
WTA-titles in her career. All of them at trier III events.
She has won the Japan Open twice (1997 and 98) and Gold
Coast, also in 1998. At Grand Slams she has been not as
successful. The best result was a quarterfinal appearence
at the Australian Open 2000. Her other 28 (!!!)
performances did not lead her that far!
The year 2002 was for the japanese no1 like many years
before. A few ups and many downs. The "ups" happened
mainly at the US-hardcourt-season where she beat Raymond
and Hantuchova at San Diego to advance to the quarters and
beat Dementieva, Coetzer and Capriati at Los Angeles to
reach the semifinals. Further she had good performances at
Montreal (3rd round) and Shanghai (Semifinal).
2003 started only with "downs" for the 27 year old
japanese. After two first round losses (Gold Coast and
Sydney) she had three second round losses (Australian
Open, Pan Pacific and Paris), and the next first round
loss is very much in sight at the Proximund Diamond
Games.....
Jelena played Ai Sugiyama only once before, and..... (read
