Well it happened again…. Jelena lost in the quarterfinals in the Open Gaz de France Tournament last week to the 8th seed, Eleni Daniilidou, in which Dokic had a really good chance to win but the lack of mental concentration obviously came into full force. Therefore, Dokic has yet to win any consecutive matches in 2003. She really does need to make a good performance this week as she heads towards Antwerp as she is in great danger of falling out of the top 10!

Now for the draw! Jelena is seeded 6th this week and is situated in the bottom half of the draw. As I have said in most of my previews for Dokic, she seems to have an even draw where the difficulty level is low, but it is getting to the point where she is now losing to players she normally wouldn’t lose to. Again, I believe her draw is fair, as she has beaten the majority of players in her half. However, most Jelena fans are nonetheless becoming optimistic in determining which players are now challenging for her.

Seeing as though Jelena has not received a bye this week, she could definitely gain some match practice by playing earlier in the week and this could lead to some much-needed confidence!

THE DRAW:

1st round:

  1. Ai Sugiyama: hometown favourite in Tokyo two weeks ago, this fighter shows she can hit with the power players and fight to the end when she stretched Monica Seles at the Pan Pacific Open 7-5 5-7 6-1; she also led Amelie Mauresmo 4-0 in their 1st round match up in the Open Gaz de France tournament last week before falling 7-5 6-2. Last time they played, Dokic was victorious 6-0 7-6 in the Olympic Games and hopefully a similar score line will repeat over the next few days!

22nd round:

  1. Jelena’s second round opponent will either be Magui Serna or Angelika Roesch and should really not pose that big a threat to Jelena if she can keep the unforced errors down. Serna, a typical clay courter, hits with a lot of topspin and depth, which are the type of conditions Jelena plays well against with her flat, penetrating shots

QF:

  1. Assuming the seeds live up to their expectations, Dokic will play against the world number 4, Justine Henin. Dokic has certainly proved she can beat the number 2 Belgium where she defeated her in Hamburg last year in straight sets, 7-6 7-6. She must be in form to certainly be in with a chance to win this match if it were to take place.

SF:

  1. Kim Clijsters: recent Sydney Champion and semi-finalist at the Australian Open, this Belgium is absolutely on fire with an amazing win-loss record since capturing the end of year Sanex Championships in November. Every match they have played has been extremely tight and assuming Jelena reaches this stage, her confidence will be soaring and the fans will be in for a great match!
